How the 6 weeks work

Never managed money before? Start here. Each week you learn one part of a portfolio manager’s job, practise it on the same client, and hand in one piece of work.

01
50 / 40 / 10 shares / bonds / gold more risk → ↑ more return
Weeks 1 and 2

Meet the client and split their money

Find out what the client needs and how much risk they can take. Then decide how much goes into shares, bonds and gold.

Hand in: your allocation plan
03
0.92 managers A and D move together you pay twice for one bet
Week 3

Pick the fund managers and build the portfolio

Choose who invests each part of the money, and spot when two managers are quietly making the same bet.

Hand in: your manager line-up
04
drifted too far rebalanced allowed range
Week 4

Keep it on track when markets move

Prices move and money comes in and out. Learn when to sell, when to buy and how to keep risk in check.

Hand in: your rebalancing plan
05
+0.8 −0.3 −0.1 +0.4% the mix stock picks costs vs market
Week 5

Follow the client’s rules and explain your results

Real clients set limits. Work inside them, then show where the returns actually came from.

Practice: a committee paper
06
Performance report Risk and rebalancing Manager line-up Allocation
Week 6

Capstone: run the whole portfolio yourself

Take one client from the first meeting to the final report, and explain every decision you made.

Final: your full portfolio file

Split the money. See what happens in a bad year.

Every portfolio starts with one question: how much goes into shares, bonds and gold? Pick a split and try to meet the client’s needs.

TOO RISKY TOO TIMID
✓ Meets the briefEnough return, and the worst year stays inside the limit. Now you have to defend it to the committee.
! Too riskyThe return looks good, but a bad year breaks the client’s loss limit. Take some equity off.
! Too timidSafe, but it will not reach 9% a year. The client misses the goal slowly instead of suddenly.

Make a call. See the miss. Fix the logic.

The simulations you run

You make a real decision, see what it costs the client, then fix it. Here are three of them.

Computer’s suggestion: put this much in shares 70% Capped to fit the client

The computer says seventy percent

A model wants most of the money in one place. Decide how much the client can really hold.

Manager D same bet

Four managers, one bet

The mix
it was the mix

Was it really stock picking?

A manager takes credit for great stock picks. Check what the numbers actually say.

WEEK 4 · KEEPING IT SAFE

The plan says 60% shares and 40% bonds. Shares have gone up, so the portfolio is now 70% shares and 30% bonds. The rule says: if any part moves more than 5 points away from the plan, bring it back. What do you do?

Right call. Not quite.

Shares are 10 points above the plan, which is more than the 5 points allowed, so you act now. Sell some shares and buy bonds until you are back at 60/40. Changing the plan to match the market means giving up on what the client asked for.

Milestone preview

Three graded milestones and a capstone. Each one is real work you can show.

✕
Week 2

Plan the client’s money

A client investing for twenty years who needs a certain return and cannot lose more than a set amount in one bad year. Their documents do not fully agree.

✓ Read the client’s needs
✓ Pick a yardstick
✓ Split the money
✓ Test a bad year
Week 3

Pick the managers and build it

Two hundred funds to choose from, a plan to fill and a lot of money to move without paying too much in costs.

✓ Index or manager?
✓ Shortlist managers
✓ Spot the double bet
✓ Build and move in
Week 4

Keep it on track

A busy quarter: new money arrives, a client wants more back than you hold in cash, and two parts have drifted off the plan.

✓ Use the new money
✓ Pay the client out
✓ Bring it back on track
✓ Explain the results
Week 6

Capstone: run it yourself

One client, start to finish. You get the brief and make every decision yourself.

✓ Read the brief
✓ Make the plan
✓ Run a quarter
✓ Report and defend
GRADED

Five ways you
actually learn

Every week follows the same simple loop: learn an idea, try it straight away, use it to make a decision, review it, then show you can do it.

ASK THE DESK

What learners ask before they join.

FMFin Maverickquestion 01 of 05

Do I need a finance background?

No. Week 1 starts from zero: who the client is and what they want from their money. If you are comfortable with percentages and a basic spreadsheet, the bootcamp teaches everything else.

FMFin Maverickquestion 02 of 05

How much time does it take each week?

Plan a few focused hours each week. Lessons are short and recorded, so you can fit them around college or work.

FMFin Maverickquestion 03 of 05

Is it live or recorded?

Fully self-paced. Lessons, actions, simulations and milestones are all on demand, so you learn when it suits you and replay anything as often as you need.

FMFin Maverickquestion 04 of 05

What do I walk out with?

A complete portfolio file you built yourself and can walk through in an interview: how you split the money, which managers you picked, how you kept risk in check and a report on the results. Strong work also earns a certificate of appreciation or a letter of recommendation.

FMFin Maverickquestion 05 of 05

Will this get me a job?

No course can promise that. What it gives you is work you can show and the answers to the questions portfolio teams actually ask. That is what gets you through the interview.
