How the 4 weeks work

Never used a derivative before? Start here. Each week you learn one part of how derivatives work, practise it on the same company, and hand in one piece of work.

01
₹83 → ₹84.7 the 3-month forward time → ↑ price
Week 1

What derivatives are and why prices hold

Learn who uses derivatives, what the contracts are, and why their prices follow from no-free-money rules.

Practice: price a simple forward
02
₹80 ₹90 ₹100 ₹110 pays off
Week 2

Forwards, futures, swaps and options

Price a forward, see how futures settle every day, and read what each option pays.

Hand in: price it and read it
03
delta 0.5 share price option value
Week 3

Value an option and hedge it

Value an option two ways, read its sensitivities and see why a hedge stops working when the price moves.

Hand in: model it and hedge it
04
Exposure Price Hedge Plan
Week 4

Capstone: hedge a real business

A business has currency, rate and share risks and not enough budget to hedge them all. Choose what to hedge.

Final: a hedging plan

THE HEDGE LAB

Pick how much to hedge. Watch the outcomes.

A forward contract locks in today’s exchange rate. Hedge more and you are safer if the rupee falls, but you give up the gain if it rises. Pick how much to lock in.

THE COMPANY Must pay $10 million in three months. Today: ₹83 per dollar. Locking in all of it costs ₹830 crore.
Share you lock in now0%25%50%75%100%
If the rupee weakens to ₹87, or strengthens to ₹79.
EXTRA COST AT ₹87 ₹40 cr₹30 cr₹20 cr₹10 cr₹0 if the rupee weakens
GAIN GIVEN UP AT ₹79 ₹0₹10 cr₹20 cr₹30 cr₹40 cr if the rupee strengthens
Nothing locked in: a ₹4 move on $10 million is ₹40 crore either way.$7.5 million open × ₹4 = ₹30 crore risk; $2.5 million locked gives up ₹10 crore.$5 million open × ₹4 = ₹20 crore risk; $5 million locked gives up ₹20 crore.$2.5 million open × ₹4 = ₹10 crore risk; $7.5 million locked gives up ₹30 crore. All $10 million locked at ₹83: no risk, and no gain if the rupee strengthens.
! A pure bet on the rupeeIf the rupee weakens, the company pays ₹40 crore more. That is gambling, not running a business.
! Still mostly openSome protection, but most of the risk is still there.
✓ BalancedHalf protected, half open. A common choice when the board is unsure.
✓ Mostly protectedThe worst case is small, and there is still some room to gain.
! No surprises, no upsideThe cost is fixed at ₹830 crore. Safe, but the board must accept missing a better rate.

Make a call. See the miss. Fix the logic.

The simulations you run

You make a real call on a hedge, see where it goes wrong, then fix it. Here are three of them.

Forward price you quoted ₹83.0 Interest gap added

Today’s price is not the forward

The quote used today’s rate. Add the interest-rate gap between the two currencies and see the real forward.

What does the forward cost?

WEEK 1 · WHY THE PRICE IS WHAT IT IS

Gold costs ₹6,000 a gram today. Borrowing money costs 10% a year, and storing gold is free. What should a one-year forward price for gold be?

Right call. Not quite.

You could borrow ₹6,000, buy gold today and hold it for a year. That costs ₹6,000 plus 10% interest, or ₹6,600. If the forward were cheaper or dearer, someone could make risk-free money. So the forward is ₹6,600, without anyone predicting where gold goes. Pricing by copying is the core idea of derivatives.

Milestone preview

Two graded milestones and a capstone. Each one is real work you can show.

Week 4

Capstone: hedge the business

Currency, rate and share risks, a budget that will not cover a perfect hedge, and a board that wants a plan.

Five ways you
actually learn

Every week follows the same simple loop: learn an idea, try it straight away, use it to make a decision, review it, then show you can do it.

ASK THE DESK

What learners ask before they join.

FMFin Maverickquestion 01 of 05

Do I need a finance background?

No. Week 1 starts from zero: what a derivative is and who uses one. If you are comfortable with percentages and a basic spreadsheet, the bootcamp teaches everything else.

FMFin Maverickquestion 02 of 05

How much time does it take each week?

Plan a few focused hours each week. Lessons are short and recorded, so you can fit them around college or work.

FMFin Maverickquestion 03 of 05

Is it live or recorded?

Fully self-paced. Lessons, actions, simulations and milestones are all on demand, so you learn when it suits you and replay anything as often as you need.

FMFin Maverickquestion 04 of 05

What do I walk out with?

Work you can walk through in an interview: a priced forward, payoff charts, a valued option with its Greeks and a hedging plan for a real business. Strong work also earns a certificate of appreciation or a letter of recommendation.

FMFin Maverickquestion 05 of 05

Will this get me a job?

No course can promise that. What it gives you is work you can show and the answers to the questions derivatives desks actually ask. That is what gets you through the interview.
